How to Get a Document Notarized

Most failed notary appointments fail for the same three reasons. All are avoidable.

What to bring

  • The complete document — unsigned, unless the act is an acknowledgment
  • Current government photo ID for every signer
  • Every signer, physically present
  • Any required witnesses — ask in advance whether the document needs them

Do not sign in advance unless you have confirmed the act is an acknowledgment. A jurat requires you to sign in front of the notary, and signing early means starting over.

Where to go

Banks and credit unions often notarise for account holders. Shipping and print shops commonly offer it. Public libraries and county offices sometimes do.

A mobile notary travels to you — useful for hospitals, care facilities, after-hours signings, or when several signers must be assembled. A remote online notary can complete the notarization by live video if the document and recipient permit it.

Why appointments fail

  • Blank spaces. A notary cannot notarise a document with blanks. Fill everything in first.
  • Signer not present. No exceptions, and no, you cannot bring the document in for someone else.
  • Expired or missing ID.
  • Wrong or missing certificate wording. If the document lacks notarial wording, the notary may need you to choose which act you need — and they cannot choose for you, because that would be legal advice.
